Characterisation Within Horror

Within horror films, the stereotypical formation of the cast consists of:

The Villain/ Antagonist:

Usually male.
The "bad guy" is usually of supernatural killing powers or a normal person that is psychotic and a also a killer.
Their main reasoning for being within the film is to torment, kill and create tension. The people usually being attacked/murdered/chased by the killer is the protagonist and their group of either family/friends/who they are with in the film.
EXAMPLE: Hannibal Lecter in Red Dragon

The Protagonist/Hero/Main Character based around the film:

Usually female.
Will typically be the last standing. They will either survive the film or be the stand to die.
Their role of the film is to keep the story going. They introduce the story, usually unaware of whatever is causing problems and someone must explain.
EXAMPLE: Emma in Scream

The Aider/One of the Final Victims:

Can be either sex, will usually die towards the end of the film.
They are usually the fountain of all knowledge, be it attempting to survive or knowledge surround who or what attacked them.
EXAMPLE: Karlsson in Clown

Monster Bait:

These are other characters in which die in the film. These are used as "fillers" for the film. They usually die in the first half of the film. They are almost always in the film with the intention to be killed.
They're usually friends or family of the protagonist.
EXAMPLE: Curt and Jules in Cabin in the Woods

Prop's Narrative Role

Propp has eight different types of characters within his theory:

The Villain - fights the hero (antagonist)
The dispatcher - tells the story of the evil villain, sends the hero on their journey
The princess - the hero wants the princess, but can't have her because of the villain. Fights for her.
The helper - aids the hero in their journey
The father of the princess - gives the task to the hero, warns him of the false hero.
The donor -aids the hero in preparation, or gives them a magical object to aid the journey and fight.
The hero - the protagonist
The false hero - takes credit for the hero's work, tries to win the princess and marry her.

For the genre of horror, you could look at the four types of characters and slot them into their theory.
The villain is the protagonist who terrorises the protagonist.
The protagonist is the hero who survives the film.
The princess can be the girl/boy who is the love interest who the hero must save against the killer.
The dispatcher can come in the form of a story to inform the hero that there's a killer and how they came about.
The helper can come in the form of monster bait.
The false hero can be a friend who they thought was aiding, but could be the villain in a plot twist or in 'cahoots' with the villain.
