research into horror film posters
Here is my research into different types of horror film posters, specifically looking at the more modern ones because my trailer is going to be a modern film.
Firstly, I looked at the 2013 film WER, directed by William Brent Bell.
I really like the text font that they have used for the title and how that font is purely used for the WER.
I find it really interesting how the arm coming from above frames the centre of the poster, so the first thing you see is the title, then the arm and woman.
I like the darkness of the overall poster and feel this is really affective to create a spooky, scary mood to the poster.
I then looked at the 2004 film, The Grudge, directed by Takashi Shimizu
What drew me to this poster was the eyeball in it. Because of the contrast of the scerla. The contrast of this against the skin, iris, pupil, hair and general darkness of this poster, really pulls you into the eye and the title. I really like this quite monotone colour scheme, with the only colours being the title and the release date for the film. I think this is a really clever and effective idea because you will remember the title and the release date for the film.
I feel it's quite obvious from the scary eye and obscure photo that this film will be a mystery photo with some thrilling bits in it because the eye is so wide.
The third poster I looked at was Scream, because I felt it had a very similar feel to it to The Grudge.

What drew me to Gregory Dark's See No Evil Poster was the angle at which the person was at. Typically, people in horror movie posters are facing forwards, but I find this quite interesting in how the character Kane is facing towards the right- hand side. I like how the hook that also is within the photograph is framing the character's face.
I also find it interesting how the photograph is lit. I like how it is lit from one side of the poster and the other side is very dark, so the font is very visible.
This led me onto looking at the poster for The Shining by Stanley Kubrick, because of the angle in which the main character Jack is at. I find this a really interesting concept because you are more drawn to the poster because the eyes aren't looking directly at the camera.
I think that I want to use a mix of a very dark image with the eyes averted away from the camera for my poster, because I feel it will be more dramatic and draw attention to my main character who I will be photographing.
