progress of magazine: in detail

Below shows the process of a draft I have created for my magazine. The top image shows the original photograph, and below it shows the beginning of the edit for my magazine I have created using photoshop and picmonkey.

First creation of my magazine: BASIC MOCK UP

Process of basic edit

What I did:
Photoshop

I put my image into photoshop when I then began to remove the colouring from the eyes of my model. I wanted to do this because of the inspiration I had found from the horror magazine Splatterpunk (shown in a previous post.) I found their work to be interesting because of the way in which their magazine front covers are all illustrated, rather than being just a photograph. I did experiment with that idea, but in the end I decided that it wasn't strong enough to go ahead with.

So, instead, I used photoshop to remove the eyes of my model. I did this by using the lasso tool to cut around the whites of her eyes, and making this a separate layer to my original photograph. I then used the levels and curves to bring the whites of the eyes down to a dark colour, then the same to the iris. I then used use and saturation to make the eyes completely black.
Then, I made this layer opaque with the opacity tool so I could see the spot in the original photograph, and then used the paint brush tool with a square brush head to add in the pixels to the black eyes layer, so that it had the same effect as normal eyes, but with a sinister look to it.

I then put my image into the online photo editing software; PicMonkey. I then applied a filter, removed the shine from the model's face and was left with the third photograph above.
Although I like the look, I don't know whether it is strong enough to be my magazine front cover. I may take some more photographs and play around with the werewolf hand within some of the photos.

Title Decision:

I have solidly decided on the title White Noise for my horror magazine, because it is quite an eerie but intriguing. I don't think I like the font I have chosen for the masthead so I think I will change that. I also don't think I like the magazine central image either, so I think I'm going to take more photographs and see what I can come up with.
